by Women's Ordination Worldwide members at Synod on the Amazon turn out
Special to The Review | November 1, 2019
indicated by WOW's press release, the demonstrations byWOW members
turned out well. There is some good stuff happening on the ground in
Rome, a member indicated. Police in Rome prohibited moving in
procession with opened purple umbrellas with the words "Women Priests"
printed on them. The reason the police gave was that in their view that
the message written on the
umbrellas was subversive. Unmarked umbrellas would have been fine but
ones with two words on them made publicly visible the call for women’s
ordination. That was perceived to be too threatening, a WOW
member said. The theme called out at the demonstration loudly
proclaimed was: Empowered women will save the Earth; Empowered
women will save the Church.
According to another demonstration participant, "It was a sunny October
day in Rome. Our dress code was green for environmental justice and
purple for gender justice. We came from the US, the UK, Canada, Italy,
Belgium and Poland."
There was some talk at the WOW steering committee meeting in Lisbon,
Portugal, prior to the demonstration at the Vatican, of a WOW
conference but as yet, nothing concrete. Rather for now the
organization will concentrate on social media contacts worldwide.
As indicated in the following article links, The Guardian, The Tablet,
Cruxnow, and Catholic News Agency, WOW members see progress being made
at the Synod of the Amazon suggesting women deacons will be up for a
vote at the end of the Synod.
