Roman Catholic Women Priests

Demonstrations by Women's Ordination Worldwide members at Synod on the Amazon turn out well

Editor, Special to The Review | November 1, 2019

As indicated by WOW's press release, the demonstrations byWOW members turned out well. There is some good stuff happening on the ground in Rome, a member indicated. Police in Rome prohibited moving in procession with opened purple umbrellas with the words "Women Priests" printed on them. The reason the police gave was that in their view that the message written on the
umbrellas was subversive. Unmarked umbrellas would have been fine but ones with two words on them made publicly visible the call for women’s ordination.  That was perceived to be too threatening, a WOW member said.  The theme called out at the demonstration loudly proclaimed was:  Empowered women will save the Earth; Empowered women will save the Church.

According to another demonstration participant, "It was a sunny October day in Rome. Our dress code was green for environmental justice and purple for gender justice. We came from the US, the UK, Canada, Italy, Belgium and Poland."

There was some talk at the WOW steering committee meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, prior to the demonstration at the Vatican, of a WOW conference but as yet, nothing concrete.  Rather for now the organization will concentrate on social media contacts worldwide.

As indicated in the following article links, The Guardian, The Tablet, Cruxnow, and Catholic News Agency, WOW members see progress being made at the Synod of the Amazon suggesting women deacons will be up for a vote at the end of the Synod.

Women's Ordination Worldwide Prayer

Loving God,

from every age you have entrusted your message to men and women alike, For your liberation and your love is not bound by gender.

Jesus our brother,
You invited men and women to be your disciples.  You sent forth the Good News of your resurrection from the mouth of Mary Magdalene.

Holy Spirit,
You move freely and fiercely, stirring the hearts of all people to bring about a reign of love and justice on earth as it is in heaven.

We gather and pray that this same Spirit of equality infuses the synod gathering here.
Open the eyes of those who cannot see their sisters in Christ as equals.

Open the hearts of those who believe that only men can make decisions for a Church comprised of people of all genders.

Open the ears of the people gathered in the Synod hall as we say,
Give women a vote.
Give women a voice.

More than half the Church is outside.
Clear a path,
Empowered women will save the Earth; Empowered women will save the Church.
Join the people of God who recognize the ministries of women as equal, valid, and a blessing.

Jesus, you wait outside with us.
Holy Spirit, you pound on closed doors.
God of Justice, you make a way where there is no way.

Hear our prayer as we live out the Gospel call to equality.
Amen.
